Central Valley’s Hidden Gems in Stockton
Today, we're diving into the Central Valley’s hidden gems, where art, history, and family fun await. Let’s kick off this adventure with Stockton’s treasures!
I’m Pat Patterson, and we’re starting at the incredible Haggin Museum—a must-see for art and history lovers! With Sue Berbert, CEO of the Haggin, by my side, we’re getting the inside scoop on this treasure that’s been wowing visitors for 93 years.
Haggin Museum
This place is a feast for the eyes, showcasing legendary artists like Albert Bierstadt and J.C. Leyendecker. Did you know Leyendecker’s famous for the New Year’s Baby and our beloved rosy-cheeked Santa Claus? They’re even celebrating his 150th anniversary with a special exhibit. Talk about history and holiday magic all in one!
As we stroll through, Sue fills me in on the museum’s story. Three generations of the Haggin family collected these works, and in the late 1920s, Isa Haggin McKee helped bring them here to Stockton. This museum beautifully blends art and history, named after the family that made it all possible.
The Haggin features an impressive collection, from Albert Bierstadt’s grand American West paintings to the works of J.C. Leyendecker, who actually gave us the classic New Year’s Baby and the rosy-cheeked Santa we know today. Plus, the museum is celebrating Leyendecker’s 150th anniversary with a special exhibit. Trust me, the Haggin Museum is a must-visit in Stockton!
Pixie Woods, a Whimsical Amusement Park
Next up, we’re headed to Pixie Woods, a whimsical amusement park with fairytale charm. I’m here with Wes Rhea and lifelong Pixie Woods fan.
“Wes, this place feels like a mini Disney park right here in Stockton!” I say, and Wes nods, smiling. “It really is,” he says. “I first visited when I was a kid, and now my kids love it too!”
Wes shows us the charm and whimsy of a place that has captivated locals for generations. From enchanting murals to playful attractions, Pixie Woods is a family favorite, lovingly maintained by volunteers.
Pixie Woods has that nostalgic feel with fun rides, colorful murals, and lots of love from the locals who keep it going. It’s the perfect spot to bring the family for a day of adventure and imagination. It’s a magical place where kids and kids-at-heart make memories to last a lifetime!
Stockton’s Iconic Fruit Bowl
The Fruit Bowl
After Pixie Woods, it’s time for a taste of Stockton’s best at the Fruit Bowl! Here, I chat with Ralph Lucetti and his son, Andrew, about their family’s farm market, established back in 1946.
“My parents started this right here by the roadside,” Ralph explains. “It all began with selling fresh peaches.”
Now, the Fruit Bowl has everything from fresh fruits to delicious treats. I can’t resist their famous peach milkshake—absolutely refreshing!
Stockton’s iconic Fruit Bowl! This family-run farm market has been a local favorite since 1946. Today, I’m meeting Ralph Lucetti and his son, Andrew, who keep the tradition alive. It all started with Ralph’s parents selling fresh peaches by the roadside, and now the Fruit Bowl is a go-to spot for Stockton’s freshest produce. Their peach milkshake? Absolute perfection! You’ve got to try it.
More Things to Do in Stockton
Historic USS Lucid
Our last stop? A tour of the USS Lucid, an incredible all-wooden minesweeper from the U.S. Navy, now being restored by volunteers and students. Dave Rakovich from the Stockton Maritime Museum gives us a tour of this floating piece of history.
“We’ve got high school students helping with the restoration,” Dave explains, “so they’re learning valuable skills while preserving history.”
Walking around the USS Lucid, you can feel the dedication and community pride. It’s truly inspiring!
Our journey continues on the historic USS Lucid, an all-wooden minesweeper lovingly restored by the Stockton Maritime Museum and local students. Dave Rakovich, the museum’s president, shares how this last-of-its-kind vessel is transforming into a floating museum. High school students are learning hands-on skills, preserving history while building a unique connection with the past—a community project that brings history and heart together.
We wrap up the day with more peachy treats from the Fruit Bowl, then head to a ball game, where we enjoy classic hot dogs and ice cream under the lights. It’s the perfect end to a day packed with Central Valley’s best.
