Discover Hidden Beach Cities in California with Pat Pattison
Torrance, California
Welcome to Pat Pattison's Best of California! We're uncovering some secret beach cities you might not know about. Our adventure begins with some places to visit in Torrance, California, a hidden gem with an incredible beach. We'll explore some surprises Torrance has to offer. Let's dive in!
Madrona Marsh
Our first stop is the Madrona Marsh in Torrance. This beautiful spot feels like a slice of the countryside right in the middle of the city. Debbie Hayes, of Discover Torrance, tells us more about this marsh right in the middle of Torrance.
The Madrona Marsh is a preserved natural habitat saved from development in the 1970s. It's a crucial resting place for migratory birds, part of specific flight paths that include Newport Bay and Playa Del Rey. The marsh has a rich history, even serving as a "grocery store" for the Tongva people, who used its resources for food and boat-making materials.
Liz Evans, the Nature Center Manager and Naturalist, shares a little of the history and biology of the Madrona Marsh.
The Madrona Marsh is part of the El Segundo Dune Complex, one of the last remaining vernal marshes in Southern California. Vernal marshes are unique freshwater ecosystems that fill with water during the rainy season and dry up during dry periods. Our marsh is home to nine vernal pools, which support hundreds of species, including federally endangered fairy shrimp. These shrimp are a vital food source for waterfowl, and we work hard to maintain this sensitive ecosystem.
It's an amazing little piece of nature right here in the middle of Southern California.

Red Car Brewery
Next up for Pat Pattison's Best of California, we're taking a break to enjoy some local flavors at the Red Car Brewery in Torrance. having a blast at Red Car Brewery in Torrance!
I dove into their Red Car Club Chicken Sandwich—thinking it’d be your classic sandwich, but wow, it’s a delightful surprise! I skipped the bacon (bread isn’t my thing), but Jeff, the pizza aficionado, couldn't resist their light, crispy pizza. And guess what? Since the sandwich is so light, I couldn't resist indulging in their tasty French fries too—it's all about balance, right?
Red Car Brewery, you've nailed it! – a must-visit in Torrance.
Western Museum of Flight in Torrance
🌟 Pat Pattison's Best of California 🌟, we’re soaring high at the Western Museum of Flight in Torrance, and wow—what an experience! The museum is packed with incredible planes, many of which I didn’t even know existed. Dale, our fantastic guide, walked us through the history and restoration process of these majestic aircraft. It’s not just about old planes here; it’s about bringing them back to life, making them shine like they did in their glory days.
This visit wasn't just informative; it was deeply personal. It gave me a newfound appreciation for the bravery of past generations. The tour took me on a journey back to my grandpa's era. Seeing these planes up close made me imagine him piloting one of these marvels, transforming him from a mere photo in an album to a hero braving the skies. It really hit home, especially when thinking about all the challenges they faced—flying in those tiny planes, dealing with real danger, and pushing through anxiety we can hardly fathom today.
This museum showcases incredible planes and offers a fascinating glimpse into aviation history. The dedication to preserving these planes really made history come alive for me.
The Western Museum of Flight is a must-see attraction—where history truly comes alive!
